The Frieze of Life
Madonna, Munch (1894)
..Now life is shaking hands with death
The chain that binds together the thousand generations
of dead with the thousand generations yet to be born
has been tied...
Edvard Munch
Nota: Segundo o "Munch Museum", "Several poetic texts related to Madonna underscore the intimate relationship between love and death". No entanto, ao pesquisar na wikipédia, deparamo-nos com a associação desta mulher a Maria, mãe de Jesus .

Lovely painting.
Eli, they’re one and the same. Check your italian, Madonna means “Nossa Senhora” in portuguese.
I know the word in italian (contraction of "ma" "donna") and it means "My Lady" - Check it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna ;-) - Usually it refers to "Mary, mother of Jesus". However, should you read about the painting's meaning at the Munch's museum website and you won't find any such connection.
This is my Munch's favorite.
I think the reference’s only about the painting’s title.
I should check my portuguese better and/or you should stop checking wikipedia… ;)
